Eagle Lake

Eagle Lake: Incredible as always! Eagle Lake is without any doubt the premier rainbow trout still water in California. The fish average 17 inches and weigh 2 pounds. You can expect 21 inch fish on a daily basis with some 24 inch models to add to your trophy photo wall. Eagle is one of the largest natural lakes in California. The Eagle Lake species of trout are indigenous to the lake and have been planted successfully in huge numbers all over California. Eagle has been managed by the CDFW as a trophy trout fishery and has special regulations to insure quality fishing during the season.

Eagle Lake update 6/18/2014

Fly fishing has been flat out awesome recently.  A series of cooler days brought water temps down triggering a major caddis & midge emergence. The fish continue to forage along the rocky submerged structure all over the south basin. Wind direction should be your compass as to where you decide to spot up for still water nymphing or casting streamers. I am hitting consistent numbers in 7-9 feet early, moving out to 11 feet as the sun gets higher.  The fish will stay tight if there are clouds or some texture from wind. My assassin birds nest patterns are perfect imitations for the long horn sedge caddis that are coming off in droves on the high pressure days. Agent Orange patterns can be fished as streamers or beneath an Under-cator. Broken back midges are great for the early afternoon chironomid hatch. The cloudy days will get a moderate to weak callibaetis hatch going;  flashback PT’s & crystal leeches are good calls in smaller sizes.

The launch ramp is in very good shape considering how low the lake is.  The LNFS is making improvements throughout the summer to keep it operational. The only issue regarding the ramp is if a strong north wind blows. There is no break-wall or protection from wind driven waves & it can be dangerous to pull or launch if this occurs.

I am fully booked at Eagle this year, but will post any cancellations if one arises.

Wicked good fishing for Bill, Ed, & Bob on their trip to Eagle. Eagle remains the best public still water for rainbows in the state in my opinion.

 Where to stay:

Eagle Lake RV Park ~This is one of the cleanest and well run RV parks you will find with beautiful views of the lake. If you don’t have your own RV they also rent cabins and trailers which are really nice. These folks are super friendly and will take good care of you. The Eagle Lake RV Park has all my fly patterns developed for Eagle Lake, and the Under-Cator strike indicator in stock. There is also a good selection of larger trolling flies that imitate the Tui-Chubs @ Eagle and have been used with good success by famous Eagle Lake guides Ronnie Beck and Timmy Noxon. Tell the friendly folks that work there I said howdy!

Heritage Land Vacation Rentals: They have a bunch of rental properties near, or right on the lake. They are great people we have dealt with exclusively over the years. Rent a house with a lake view and walk to the boat in the morning!

Susanville has good motels and restaurants,  you will need to drive about 45 minutes one way to get to Spalding. You can get food and supplies here before driving up to the lake.

High Country Inn in Susanville seems to be the favorite amongst the return folks and they are very well located for all your needs. (530) 257-3450. There is also a casino/motel near Susanville and those that have stayed here love it. Inexpensive clean rooms and very good food 24 hours a day. Diamond Mountain Casino.
