Doug-R grew up in sunny southern California and would spend many summers vacationing in Yosemite National Park with his family since before he could crawl. The sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors were instilled in him at a young age, as he experienced the beauty of the high country. His interest in trout fishing started at the age of 9, when he witnessed an angler reeling up a trout out of the Merced River. To this day, he still remembers the sun’s bright glare reflecting off the fish’s iridescent scales. It was this magical and captivating scene that would spawn his passion for fishing. The following year, he hooked his first trout in the gin clear waters of the Merced.
Doug took up fly fishing at the age of 18 and traveled to Montana a few years later, where he learned to fish the Madison River by drift boat and wade fished the Yellowstone and North Fork of the Snake River in Idaho. He eventually found his way to Mammoth Lakes where he now lives and guides.
His patience, outgoing personality, and teaching techniques have served him well in guiding clients to some of the best fishing areas in the Eastern Sierra. He has a knack for working with beginners and youngsters and finds it very rewarding to watch them catch their first fish on a fly rod. Doug’s knowledge of the area and fly fishing techniques have also challenged and rewarded some of the most experienced of fly fisherman. Many of our clients claim an outing with Doug is like fishing with a friend they have known for years. Doug has appeared numerous times on the pages and covers of Western Outdoor News, with his clients displaying their trophy catches and their smiles.
By learning from his mentor and friend, Tom Loe, Doug soon found himself taking over as the owner of Sierra Drifters Guide Service, where he continues to innovate and provide the best service and instruction to Sierra Drifter’s repeat and fast growing customer base.
Doug’s top of the line Ranger Bay Boat spans 24’ in length and sports an impressive 250 HP Mercury Verado which not only gets you to the biting fish quickly and safely, but employs some of the most cutting edge electronics and fish finding tools available. We Let Our Clients do the talking…Here’s What Some Have Said About Spending their day with Doug:
Dear Tom Loe,
We are writing you to share our greatest river fishing experience that your guide Doug Rodricks provided to us. He is a patient and skillful educator in the art of wet fly fishing. His technique resulted in many opportunities in catching browns and rainbows, some trophy size. We were in the spotlight among other anglers with so many hookups. One gentleman asked Doug a question which he courteously answered resulting in a hookup for that angler. We are already planning another fishing experience with our family which includes Doug Rodricks. Thank you for providing the best guide and best guide experience we have ever had.
Very Sincerely, Jim & Nancy Illian
Just a note to let you know what a wonderful time we had out on the lake with Doug. He was an awesome guide. This was our first time fly fishing from a boat. He taught us a lot and he was very patient with us. We would definitely try it again. It was a great experience.

Tom, I just wanted to take a minute to tell you what a great time my granddaughter Ashton and I had last week (or was it the week before–time flies too fast for me)! Doug Rodricks took us out for a day on Crowley and Two-Bug Doug took us for one on the Owens River. Both were new places for us. I think Doug Rodricks is a fairly new guide for you. Well, he’s terrific! He’s got a great personality, is attentive to his guests, relates well to them, and knows how to fish and how to find fish. His boat was immaculate. Your boats are about the nicest fishing platforms I’ve ever been on! I’d go fishing with him again anytime! Doug Dolan is a known commodity for you, and we had an equally great day with him. I’d have a hard time choosing which one to go with again! Thanks for helping us have a really special fishing adventure! Next month Ashton is heading to UC Davis for her first year of college, so this was a really special trip for us.
Best regards, Dave Kelley
I wanted to let you know what a great time we had with Doug as our guide last Saturday. My 20 year old son and I wanted to try our hand at fly fishing and Doug was the perfect fit for what we were looking for. He paid great attention to our every need, gave great instruction and took us to some extraordinary places. He was punctual and generous with his time. We will be back next summer and I hope Doug is still there so we can have him for another great fishing experience.
