Eagle Lake 5/24/18
Eagle is looking pretty good for the opener. Water levels are about the same to start the season as last year. The Gallatin boat ramp is fine for larger boats, while the facilities at the Spalding ramp are better suited for smaller vessels. The CDFW and PELT have planted fish last fall, and this spring. The “catching” is forecast to be much better this year as Eagle recovers from the low water levels it experienced a couple years ago. The store at the Eagle RV Park is open in Spalding, and will be carrying a complete updated fly box. Good calls for the opening period are Assassins, parallel Assassins, Agent Orange, Level Leeches, broken back midges, and tiger midges. Casting or trolling streamers like Spruce-A-Bu’s and larger Punk Perch will also get grabs along the rock piles and drop-offs. I have found fish in 8-12 feet this time of year on the south shoreline, and close to the broccoli tree across from Miners Pt. Hang your flies below an Under-Cator keeping them a foot off the tufa rocks. If you end up on the mud bottom closer to Merrill and Christies-fish flashback pheasant tails and midge patterns keeping the tiger/zebra midges closer to the bottom. We will not be guiding at Eagle this year; however look for us to set up trips for the 2019 season.
Eagle is one of the best still waters in California. Quality rainbows that pull hard. Just ask Bill, Bob, & Ed!
Where to stay:
Eagle Lake RV Park ~This is one of the cleanest and well run RV parks you will find with beautiful views of the lake. If you don’t have your own RV they also rent cabins and trailers which are really nice. These folks are super friendly and will take good care of you. The Eagle Lake RV Park has all my fly patterns developed for Eagle Lake, and the Under-Cator strike indicator in stock. There is also a good selection of larger trolling flies that imitate the Tui-Chubs @ Eagle and have been used with good success by famous Eagle Lake guides Ronnie Beck and Timmy Noxon. Tell the friendly folks that work there I said howdy!
Heritage Land Vacation Rentals: They have a bunch of rental properties near, or right on the lake. They are great people we have dealt with exclusively over the years. Rent a house with a lake view and walk to the boat in the morning!
Susanville has good motels and restaurants, you will need to drive about 45 minutes one way to get to Spalding. You can get food and supplies here before driving up to the lake.
High Country Inn in Susanville seems to be the favorite amongst the return folks and they are very well located for all your needs. (530) 257-3450. There is also a casino/motel near Susanville and those that have stayed here love it. Inexpensive clean rooms and very good food 24 hours a day. Diamond Mountain Casino.
